Late Friday, there was a claim from Germany’s Bild that Newcastle were interested in Bayern Munich defender Lucas Hernandez. The French World Cup winner has had limited opportunities in Munich since his £72m move from Atletico Madrid last summer.

Injuries have played a part in the 24-year-old’s lack of time on the pitch. He missed over three months of this campaign after undergoing ankle surgery last October.

The emergence of Canadian international Alphonso Davies at left-back, along with the smooth transition to center-back for David Alaba, has resulted in few chances for Hernandez since his return from injury.

Bayern manager Hansi Flick is sticking with a back four of Davies, Alaba, Jerome Boateng, and Benjamin Pavard for the time being. In today’s 5-2 win against Frankfurt, it was no different though Hernandez came on as a 73rd-minute substitute for Boateng.

Despite currently being well down in the pecking order, it seems that Hernandez is committed to fighting for his place at Bayern.

Speaking to Sky Germany, the defender’s agent, Manuel Garcia Quilon, said the following about his client’s link to Newcastle:

“Lucas will not change and will definitely stay with Bayern.”
