Alan Shearer says he hopes there is substance to the latest round of takeover talk – but admits he is not getting excited about the prospect of end to 11 years of Mike Ashley.

Now he has expanded on that theory for betting site Coral, telling them that he has “heard it all before”.

“I can’t get excited at all about the potential takeover at Newcastle.

Shearer has been a prominent critic of Ashley in recent years and his immediate reaction to the news – revealed by the owner himself on Sky News – was that it was the usual spin before the January transfer window.

“They came unstuck against West Ham but they bounced back with a good point at Everton, so overall there has been much more promise and that’s been great to see.”

Shearer is more enthused about on-the-field matters, though, hailing United for their fight in grinding out a point against Everton after disappointment against West Ham.

“That said, it is definitely much needed so I hope that this time there does end up being more substance behind the rumours.
