Since buying Newcastle in 2007, Ashley has stuck with the Toon through two relegations from the Premier League but remained cautious in the transfer market.

The founder of Sports Direct, Great Britain's largest sports-goods retailer, Ashley has officially had Newcastle up for sale since October 2017, but has a £300million asking price.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, whose clothing brand 'FIVE' is sold at Sports Direct, questioned the subject of Newcastle fans' anger, however.

Shearer, a Newcastle legend who has been vocal on his negative views towards Ashley, then decide to recite Newcastle's most recent club accounts from June 2017.

In the report, it details that Newcastle made an operating loss of £90.9m, while the club also made a £41.3m loss after tax.

"The last club accounts tell you they are over £140 million in debt!!" Shearer tweeted with a thinking emoji, in response to Ferdinand.

"If Rafa loves Newcastle as he says - spend some of his own money. He's got enough."
