Amanda Staveley stoked flames but Premier League silent on Newcastle takeover

The Premier League are still refusing to comment after Newcastle United's takeover collapsed on Thursday.

After 17 weeks without a resolution, Amanda Staveley, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) and the Reuben Brothers walked away from their bid after growing frustrated with the Premier League's owners' and directors' test.

One of the big issues the Premier League had to tackle was trying to, somehow, establish that the PIF was independent from the state and the consortium, who feared there was no endgame in sight, felt they had answered every question put to them.

Another sticking point the governing body had to grapple with was Saudi Arabia's history with piracy; a source who opposed the deal told ChronicleLive last week they had previously been '99% certain' the buyout would still happen but the 'needless' ban of beIN SPORTS in the Kingdom raised serious doubts.

Staveley has claimed that the Premier League wanted Saudi Arabia, the country itself, to become a director of the the club and said 'if the fans want this back on, then they’re going to have to go to the Premier League and say this isn’t fair'.

A number of Newcastle supporters have since emailed Richard Masters, the Premier League's chief executive, to voice their concern and call for an explanation, as we did in our open letter to the governing body.

ChronicleLive reached out to the Premier League on Thursday and Friday, but the governing body again stressed they will not be commenting on the matter.

That has been a stance the Premier League have maintained throughout this process and although Richard Masters previously admitted he 'appreciated' the uncertainty for Newcastle fans, the chief executive added he 'could not talk about the specifics' because there were 'legal requirements in place'.
