Mikel Arteta has discussed why he rejected the chances to become manager of Arsenal and Newcastle.

We have a staff environment where we are challenged daily but at the same time we have a very good human collective.

Arteta was courted by Arsenal in the summer of 2018 and was the favourite to replace Arsene Wenger in charge before Unai Emery was appointed.



“And you are comfortable and have fun, and every day this good atmosphere helps a lot.”

The former Gunners midfielder was then linked with the vacancy that Rafael Benitez left at Newcastle before the start of the current season, but ultimately opted to stay as Manchester City assistant.

Arteta says that “loyalty” to Pep Guardiola’s side was part of the reason behind both rejections.

“I was about to leave [for Arsenal], but I stopped myself.
