Back-to-basics Burnley return to winning ways with hard-fought win against Newcastle

There was a sense that it would be back-to-basics for Burnley after three defeats in eight days had seen them ship 11 goals and that’s exactly how it turned out as Sean Dyche’s men ground out a slender victory.

It was not pretty and a DVD of this match would not make for a good Christmas present but Chris Wood’s goal counted for the precious commodity of three points.

Flowing football was in short supply on a miserable winter afternoon, so it was no surprise that the decisive moment was from a set-piece.

Ashley Westwood’s in-swinging pinpoint delivery to the back post was inch perfect for Wood to head in from all of two yards for his seventh goal of the season.

It was enough to beat a Newcastle side that had lost only one of their previous seven, but without the vision of Jonjo Shelvey in midfield or the blistering pace of Allan Saint-Maximin, their threat was minimal.

Without those two, Andy Carroll was thrown in from the start and the striker was handed the captain’s armband.

Still searching for his first goal in his second spell on Tyneside, the big number nine could and should have ended that wait inside the opening five minutes.
