Newcastle United suffered a 1-0 defeat against Burnley as the Magpies' three-game unbeaten run ended at Turf Moor.

Chris Wood broke the deadlock just before the hour mark after heading home from Ashley Westood's corner in a game which lacked quality.

Saturday's visit of Crystal Palace will be an important game as Newcastle embark on a run of four games in 11 days during the festive period.

For the first time since completing his club-record £40m move from Hoffenheim last summer, Joelinton started a game for Newcastle out wide.

Six further players were absent - Jamaal Lascelles, Matt Ritchie, Allan Saint-Maximin, Ciaran Clark, Ki and Karl Darlow - and it told in the second half when Newcastle needed to get back into the game.

Burnley conceded 11 goals in heavy defeats against Man City and Spurs earlier this month but Newcastle struggled to test the Clarets.

The 23-year-old was certainly involved in the thick of it - Burnley fans booed him and felt he should have been sent off for a second booking on a couple of occasions - and teed up Dwight Gayle for the Magpies' best chance of the game late on.
