CHELSEA 1-0 NEWCASTLE

28: Ey up! A Newcastle chance as Hayden plays a delightful ball over to Perez. The forward looks to find Rondon in the middle but Luiz blocks for a corner, which finds Lejeune on the edge of the area. He volleys towards goal but that needed a deflection to cause Kepa any problems.

25: Booked! Matt Ritchie is shown a yellow, as I predicted, for a late sliding challenge on Azpilicueta. Not much contact to be fair.

Anyway, Willian stands over a free-kick next to the byline… over! David Luiz is given a free run and sees his goal bound effort deflect off Lascelles. Would have been 2-0 without that touch.

23: I’ll be honest guys - I have Eden Hazard as my fantasy football captain and would dearly enjoy some points today. I’m currently in a relegation scrap with Big Dave from the other side of the office…

20:Only Huddersfield have scored less goals than Newcastle this season. Marcos Alonso compensates for losing possession by intercepting a Yedlin pass - aimed for Perez - with the Magpies having looked to break.

18: Chelsea at 70 percent possession. Newcastle just playing into their hands.

15: Eden Hazard performs some sorcery to win a corner but Antonio Rudiger fouls Dubravka inside the penalty area. Referee Chris Kavanagh spots it.

12: David Luiz has registered two assists in his last three Premier League games, having not set up a teammate in 66 games prior to this run.

10: What’s the response been like? I’ll let you know when it happens. It’s like a stroll in the park for Chelsea, who are being given the freedom of Stamford Bridge in these early stages.

CHELSEA 1-0 NEWCASTLE | PEDRO

8: Breakthrough! I said it was important to strike early against Newcastle and Pedro has obliged with a delightful lob over Martin Dubravka.

David Luiz launches a lofted pass over the static Newcastle defence and Dubravka is caught in no mans land. Pedro nips in and clips it over the goalkeeper and into the net.

Perfect start for Maurizio Sarri’s side.

7: I’ll just make the one prediction today, and that is Matt Ritchie, who’s playing at left wing-back, will be booked. Already left his leg in on Pedro and looks mightily fired up.

6: I know it sounds blindingly obvious but an early goal is SO important when playing against Newcastle. No sign of the opener yet as Chelsea pass the ball around in midfield without any penetration.

5: Mike Ashley attending Chelsea-Newcastle and he quickly hears a chant of: “Get out of our club, you fat f*****g b*****d get out of our club." Charming stuff.

Newcastle have already left their mark on Willian and Pedro, who both hit the deck clutching their feet.

3: So Callum Hudson-Odoi starts to domestic cup matches, does very well and then finds him promptly on the bench… not exactly a ringing endorsement of the sought-after talent.

Anyway, quite a slow and ponderous start here as Newcastle set their stall out to defend Nearly everyone behind the ball as the Blues look to stretch the play from left to right.

CHELSEA 0-0 NEWCASTLE

1: Well here we go for our last offering on the day. Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle look set to frustrate a Chelsea who are struggling for creativity and goals. I suspect Eden Hazard will be man-marked by at least seven or eight Toon players…

Nearly ready…

17:25: I think Chelsea need to switch those sparklers off. I get they want a slick surface but we’re two minutes away from a blimn’ flood at Stamford Bridge!

Perhaps even more interesting than water was the heated debate between Jake Humphrey and Rio Ferdinand in the BT Sport studio. The former Manchester United defender was defending Mike Ashley while Humphrey criticised his running of the club. Seconds away from full-on blows!

Comfy…

17:20: Chelsea have lost only one of their 23 home Premier League games against Newcastle (W16 D6), a 0-2 defeat in May 2012 under Roberto Di Matteo.

Twitter round-up

Tom: Bored of the same line up week in, week out. No goals in this side with no strikers. Our best player losing so much impact being played as a false 9, CHO not in contention despite playing really well, I want to give Sarri time, I will give him time, but it’s hard.

Chuck: To be honest, I see no reason Sarri isn't playing either Morata or Giroud against Newcastle. Hazard as a false 9 doesn't help his game or Chelsea's fluidity.

AJ: When will Sarri realise playing without a striker doesn't work for Chelsea. It’s absolutely the reason why Chelsea have been either drawing or losing.

Team news

17:15: Eden Hazard is once again named as Chelsea's 'false nine' for the game against Newcastle.

Callum Hudson-Odoi dropped to the substitutes' bench as one of three changes from the side which began Tuesday's Carabao Cup semi-final first leg loss to Tottenham, with David Luiz, Mateo Kovacic and Pedro brought in.

Andreas Christensen and Ross Barkley also dropped to the bench.

Newcastle reverted to their Premier League line-up, making two changes from the 2-0 loss to Manchester United, with Florian Lejeune coming in alongside league debutant Sean Longstaff.

The starting XI…

17:10: Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of the Premier League. Quite a few very interesting results at the bottom of the Premier League today with Fulham suffering a damaging defeat to Burnley, who scored twice without having a shot on target… work that one out.

West Ham also beat Arsenal at the London Stadium, which is great news for Maurizio Sarri’s side. A won today would see Chelsea move six points clear of their London rivals.

Chelsea XI: Kepa; Arrizabalaga, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Alonso, Jorginho, Kante, Kovacic, Willian, Hazard, Pedro.

Subs: Caballero, Christensen, Emerson, Ampadu, Barkley, Hudson-Odoi, Giroud.

Newcastle XI: Dubravka; Yedlin, Lejeune, Lascelles, Clark, Ritchie; Ayoze Perez, Longstaff, Hayden, Atsu; Rondon.

Subs: Schar, Murphy, Fernandez, Manquillo, Joselu, Sterry, Woodman.

CHELSEA vs NEWCASTLE

Alvaro Morata is an injury doubt after he missed Tuesday's Carabao Cup semi-final first leg with Tottenham with a minor hamstring problem. Ruben Loftus-Cheek (back) is out and Cesc Fabregas will not be considered ahead of his likely move to Monaco.

Newcastle defenders Federico Fernandez (hip) and Ciaran Clark (ankle) will both return to contention to give boss Rafael Benitez more options at the back, but Jonjo Shelvey (thigh) will play no part and fellow defender Kenedy is not eligible to face his parent club. Paul Dummett (hamstring) and Karl Darlow (elbow) are still out.

Last season: Newcastle 3 Chelsea 0, Chelsea 3 Newcastle 1

Last five league matches: Chelsea W L W W D; Newcastle W D L D L

Top scorers (all competitions): Eden Hazard (Chelsea) 12; Salomon Rondon (Newcastle) 6

Referee: Chris Kavanagh (Lancashire)
