The video will start in 8 Cancel Newcastle United legend Chris Waddle believes Steve Bruce will be deemed a success if he matches Rafa Benitez and keeps United in the Premier League.

"I don’t think anyone ever thought Steve Bruce would come in and be competing for trophies and the European places.

Rafa was idolised there but if Steve Bruce keeps them up then he has done what Rafa did and if avoiding relegation is their aim, he will have done what is expected."

United climbed out of the relegation zone following their victory over Manchester United at St James' Park on Sunday.

Speaking to the Racing Post, Waddle believes it was a good time for his former side to face the out-of-form Red Devils.

Waddle said: "It was a good time for Newcastle to play Manchester United.

The 58-year-old added it was a return to Benitez's tactics that secured the result, and the aim for Bruce this season is to keep United in the Premier League.
