Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce could have a transfer budget of up to £25million in the January transfer window, according to The Athletic journalist Chris Waugh.

The former Chronicle reporter claimed via a live Q&A session on The Athletic’s website on Friday that the budget can be bolstered by player sales but could be enough to get in a couple of new players for the second half of the campaign.

When asked if the Magpies will have a decent budget in January, Waugh replied: Yes. In the region of £15 million to £25 million, which can be augmented by players sales.

“In the current climate, and in January when transfers are inflated further, it isn’t exactly huge money, but might get Newcastle one or two decent additions who can really aid their season, if they scout well.”

OPINION

Newcastle spent a lot of money in the summer. According to the Chronicle, the Magpies’ outlay was around £75million, so Bruce was never going to have a massive pot of cash to burn his way through in January – especially with Mike Ashley still in the boardroom. £25million could be enough to get in one or two decent players though. The Magpies could invest all of that cash in one big addition or they could spread it and try to add strength in depth to different areas of the squad. Bruce’s defence seems to be fine while he also has four strikers to choose from. If anywhere needs improvement in January it’s the centre of the midfield and the right-wing. Unfortunately they are positions where players could cost a lot of money, but if Newcastle want to avoid relegation, they’re going to need to splash the cash on premium players. No one wants to see bargain basement shopping midway through the campaign.
