Newcastle United midfielder Elliot Anderson has signed his first professional deal with the Magpies.

The club confirmed the news via their official website on Friday afternoon.

The starlet turned 17 earlier this week, and has been at the club since under-nine level.

His grandfather, Geoff Allen, also played for the Toon Army, and helped the club win the Inter Fairs Cup in 1969.

Newcastle seem to be putting a real emphasis on their youth system at the moment, and it’s good to see. With the likes of Sean and Matty Longstaff breaking into the first team recently, and with fellow academy starlet Joe White also putting pen to paper on a professional deal earlier this week, it’s clear that the Toon Army have one eye on the future. That is never going to be a negative thing, of course, but with Mike Ashley at the helm, it’s hard not to suspect that everything might have an ulterior motive. In this case, the concern will be that the youth coming through replaces a progressive transfer policy, or that these players are viewed as commodities to be sold once they reach a certain level of potential. The litmus test will be how the Toon Army react to reported interest in Sean Longstaff, as per Sky Sports. If he is sold on immediately, fans will surely fear the worst.
