BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand has continued his defence of Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley this morning - despite receiving a backlash for his comments on air on Saturday evening.

And they owe a thank you to Mike Ashley for getting Rafa Benitez.” Yet despite the widespread condemnation of his comments, Ferdinand took to Twitter this morning to further defend the Newcastle owner.

The 40-year-old suggested Magpies fans should thank Mike Ashley for spending £50milion of 'his own money' to win promotion during the 2016/17 season, despite United generating over £80million in player sales that same campaign.

He also suggested fans should thank Ashley for bringing Benitez to the club (even though Benitez approached Newcastle) when asked about the Spaniard's frustrations at Newcastle's transfer business.

The former England and Manchester United defender was blasted on social media - not only by Newcastle fans - for his comments ahead of the Magpies' 2-1 defeat to Chelsea.

For context, Newcastle have made a net profit across the last three transfer windows despite Ashley promising in each of the last two summer transfer windows that Benitez could have 'every penny the club generates'.

By the way, please say thank you for getting Rafa Benítez in!
