Magpies midfielder Matty Longstaff has earned his first call up to the England U20 squad for their games against Portugal and Iceland later this month.

Matty has never represented England at any level previously but has impressed for Newcastle since making his home debut at St James’ Park last month, playing superbly and scoring the winner against Man Utd, Discussing the call-up, here’s what he told the club’s official website: “It’s great to be called up – obviously I haven’t had the privilege yet of going away with them, so I’m looking forward to it.

This isn’t the only great news for the 19-year-old today either, with his dream strike against Man United being officially announced as the Premier League’s Goal of the Month for October.

Elsewhere, defenders DeAndre Yedlin and Ciaran Clark have also been chosen to represent their respective countries in the upcoming international break, while NUFC youngster Joe White has also been called up to the England U-18 set up – just days after signing a professional contract with the club.

“But that’s not until next week – we’ve still got a massive game on Saturday where hopefully we can come away with three points and give us a big momentum boost going into the international break, and for when we come back.

“When you play in the Premier League, you’re on show to everyone and thankfully for me, that’s helped me get into the England set up.

I was in the physio room when you came and told me I was in the squad, and I’m looking forward to it.” Matty then spoke about good friend and ex-Mag Lewis Gibson – who has been tipped to leave Everton and return to Newcastle – the ‘daunting’ prospect of linking up with a new squad and our recent form heading into the international break: “When he went to Everton, you still text but you don’t see him as often, so we’ll get to go back to our under-18 days, when we used to play together, which should be enjoyable,” “It’s a bit daunting going into a new squad – I imagine the lads will all be sound and they’ll be good lads, but when you get that one person you can relate to and stick with, he’ll hopefully help me a bit which should only be beneficial for me.
