Excellent Chance For Newcastle To Have Strong Run-In To The Season

The Premier League will take things very slowly as they allow teams to prepare to finish off the season.

The tentative date to start matches is mid-June, although that could be a bit early considering players have had 10 weeks off before they returned to phase on of training last Tuesday.

The phase one training does not include any contact – but phase two does.

I think it’s phase nine when they can kick a ball.

No – just kidding.

One good thing about the run-in to the season – we have nine league games to play, and a quarter-final FA Cup tie against Manchester City – is the players know they will be playing for their Newcastle careers.

We will soon have new owners at the club.

That game between Manchester City and Newcastle could be billed as a game between the two richest football clubs in the world – but maybe that’s a little premature about Newcastle.

Jamaal Lascelles (shown above), is the leader and captain at Newcastle, and he has given an interview in the Mirror today.

As ever Jamaal is upbeat and makes some upbeat and positive points:

“We’re in a good position.” “A lot of people would have answered ‘yes’ if they’d been offered 35 points with nine games left.

“A lot of fans would too.”

“For me, we’re in a decent enough position to secure our place but try to kick on.”

“We’re all thinking about it still.” “We’d put ourselves in with a great opportunity to really go for the cup.”

“We know in cup games anything can happen.”

When the season was suspended on Friday 13th March, we were playing well and had just beaten Southampton at St. Mary’s 1-0, with the winning goal coming from in-form Allan Saint-Maximin.

We have 35 points from 29 games and, as Jamaal says, can push on from there.

A couple of wins will ensure safety in the league, and we can give it a go in the FA Cup.

Steve Bruce will know these will be the final games he will manage at Newcastle, so he, too, will be motivated to do well while still manager of his home town club.

It should be interesting, always assuming the coronavirus pandemic can be kept under control, as the players finish the 2019-2020 season.
