Steve Bruce wants a clearer pathway between the club's Academy and first team training base in the aftermath of Neil Redfearn's sudden departure last week.

The Newcastle United chief has taken more of an interest in the second string than the Toon bosses that have been in the job before him and Bruce has been a regular at most Under-23 home games this term.

Newcastle will also review all of their loan deals with Elias Sorensen again overlooked by Carlisle United in their FA Cup tie against Dulwich Hamlet.

Former United boss Rafa Benitez took a step back from the club's second string side during the club's stay in the Sky Bet Championship and left the recruitment of youngsters in the hands of Steve Nickson.

During his time at Hull City he worked closely with his current first team coach Stephen Clemence and prefers cohesion with the second string and first team.

But Bruce wants more of an input with the Under-23s and Under-18s and would like a say on who gets the job as reserve team manager after Redfearn.

Despite Redfearn's departure it has been a positive week for the club's youngsters with teenagers Joe White and Elliot Anderson signing professional deals and Kell Watts penning a extension to his current agreement.
