Newcastle want to re-sign Everton defender Lewis Gibson – the highly-rated Geordie youngster who left the club just two years ago.

This comes from an ‘exclusive’ from the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, who claims that he ‘door is open’ for the 19-year-old to return to Tyneside now ex-U-23 coach Peter Beardsley has left the club.

Either way, it would be great to have such a highly-rated local lad back at the club, especially when we’ve seen just how much the Longstaff brothers have come on over the past 12 months.

Here’s a snippet from Craig Hope’s intriguing new ‘exclusive’ for the Daily Mail: ‘Newcastle want to bring England youth international Lewis Gibson back to St James’ Park, and the Everton defender could be tempted, now that Peter Beardsley has left.

As Hope reports below, Gibson had made a complaint against Beardsley – who has since been sacked by the club – with this unresolved issue said to be one of the key factors behind his £6m move to Goodison Park in the summer of 2017: That said, it sounds like Gibson – who is friends with the Longstaff brothers – is ‘tempted’ to return to Tyneside, with Beardsley gone and his contract at Everton set to expire next summer as things stand.

I imagine the fee will only be £6m if he goes on to play first-team games etc., but a good friend of mine (who is an avid Everton fan) told me over the summer that Gibson was one of their youngsters who was knocking on the first-team door over pre-season.

The 19-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season and he is friends with the Longstaff brothers, who are now starring for the Toon first team.‘ This makes a lot of sense from a Newcastle perspective, but are Everton really going to release a player they paid decent money to sign just a few years ago?
