Andre Villas-Boas has rejected a significant pay rise to replace Steve Bruce following a Saudi-backed takeover, according to L‘Equipe.

The French media outlet has impressed at Marseille this season but notoriously failed during spells with Chelsea and Spurs.

They report that our new owners were prepared to offer AVB a ‘golden bridge’ and a ‘significantly’ higher pay rise to make the move back to England.

This news comes following a story from L’Equipe earlier this week claiming Lille director of football Luis Campos has also rejected a switch to Tyneside to operate in a similar role for our club.

Whether we should take these rumours as a pinch of salt is one thing, as L’Equipe aren’t exactly the most reputable source of information.

AVB would likely be an unpopular appointment with our fanbase, as nothing during his last stint in England proved he has what it takes to take us to the next level.
