Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has explained why Fernandinho wasn’t shown a second yellow card against Newcastle on Saturday.
“You want to send someone off for an absolute yellow card.”
“I think no second yellow,” the former Premier League official told Sky Sports’ Ref Watch on Monday morning.
I'd be very surprised if a player is sent off for a second yellow for that.
The Manchester City midfielder brought down Javier Manquillo on the edge of the box, with referee Chris Kavanagh awarding a foul but no second yellow card despite calls for him to do so.
But Gallagher has now opened up on why Kavanagh was right not to show Fernandinho a second yellow card at St James’ Park.
And although Newcastle drew level from the resulting set-piece, with Jonjo Shelvey firing home from the edge of the box, many reacting to the initial foul were left confused as to why Kavanagh had failed to give the Brazilian his marching orders.
