Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has revealed he goes through frequent shockwave therapy to maintain his fitness.

Shelvey had to see a surgeon after picking up a thigh strain in August during the defeat against Norwich City and has resorted to the therapy ever since that setback.

The Magpies’ captain in absence of Jamaal Lascelles shared that he is still in lots of pain with the injury, and has lumps in his leg – something that he has to bear with to feature each week in the Premier League.

“I’ve still got the lumps in my leg but while it’s still fine, I’m going to keep training and keep playing,” he told the club programme, as quoted by the Chronicle.

“I think it’s used to treat kidney stones or something like that. It’s like a gun that goes onto your leg. It’s painful when being done. You have to just grin and bear it, I suppose.”

Shelvey played the full 90 minutes in the recent 2-2 draw against Manchester City, scoring the equaliser from long-range at St James’ Park.

OPINION

Well, many Newcastle fans may have a different opinion on Shelvey now after hearing this news. The Magpies’ midfielder has been questioned before in terms of his work rate in the middle of the park, but he went to reveal that Steve Bruce and his staff have been impressed with the numbers he is achieving in games this season in terms of distance covered and so on. Shelvey having to go through the painful therapy just to keep up his fitness and feature on a weekly basis only highlights the desire he has for the club, and that is being proved on the pitch in every game. His added importance this season has seen him reap the rewards with the captaincy, and consecutive starts – something which has helped him cement his spot as the club’s top scorer this season. Bruce has clearly given him more responsibility than he had under Rafael Benitez, and that is finally seeing him thrive in the North East.
