How Newcastle players will react to psychological blow of falling into bottom three for huge week

Newcastle United players' mindset will not change now that the Magpies have slipped back into the bottom three, insists Ciaran Clark.

Rafa Benitez's men dropped into the relegation zone for the first time since November after they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday, despite performing well for long periods.

Despite that, Clark is confident Benitez's men can finally turn their home form around and secure what would be a huge psychological victory.

However, the Magpies once again lacked a clinical touch in front of goal, and were punished by a Chelsea team who are aiming for Champions League qualification this season.

Although the main priority this week is Saturday's massive game against relegation rivals Cardiff, Newcastle have their FA Cup third-round replay against Blackburn Rovers to navigate first.

But, given that Newcastle have won only twice at St James' Park all season, next weekend's relegation clash is far from a home banker for the Magpies.

"It's a massive game and we have to keep working on improving key areas," Clark said following the narrow defeat at Stamford Bridge.
