Kevin Keegan told Newcastle United players they owed the supporters ahead of the Magpies' stunning 5-0 win against Manchester United in 1996.

They had also seen their side hammered by Manchester United at Wembley in the Charity Shield just a couple of months previously.

"I always remember being in the changing room before the game and normally a manager comes in and does a big team talk about the team you're playing against and Kevin Keegan just came in and said, 'Look, you owe these supporters,'" Ferdinand told Sky Sports News.

"They humiliated us in the Charity Shield before the season started and we just needed to give the supporters something back and on that day, we managed to do that."

Man United had pipped us to the title a year before and it was a case of giving something back to the supporters.

The result was all the sweeter for Newcastle fans after witnessing the Red Devils overhaul a 12-point deficit to win the title the previous season.

It was a performance which marked the peak of the Entertainers' era as Keegan's side put the champions to the sword at St James' Park thanks to goals from Darren Peacock, David Ginola, Les Ferdinand, Alan Shearer and, of course, Philippe Albert.
