Steve Bruce and Matty Longstaff held a discussion over the midfielder's future two weeks ago - but a new deal is still no further forward.

"Matt is the most important one because his deal runs out.

Despite the clock ticking on a new deal, Bruce is still confident that a positive outcome can reached which will please all parties - although he maintains, he won't get involved.

While United's head coach says he tries to stay out of contract talks, he admits that he is 'desperate' for Longstaff to stay.

Asked about the view that the club should be offering new deals to both Longstaff brothers without hesitation, Bruce said: "It's not as simple as that – it is every player's prerogative.

"They are both (out of contract) and conversations will be had.”

"Both sides have got to be happy and at the minute, there is a bit of an impasse but I am confident we will still get it done.“ Longstaff is not the only player whose contract runs out at the end of the season - with Bruce well aware that decisions will need to be made on several others - including Federico Fernandez.
