Ex-Premier League referee Mark Halsey has revealed missing Callum McManaman's horror challenge on Newcastle defender Massadio Haidara was the 'biggest mistake' of his career.

Halsey, who had recovered from cancer three years earlier, has also revealed the incident led to him retiring as a referee at the end of that season.



"Missing Callum McManaman’s career-threatening challenge on Newcastle’s Massadio Haidara was the biggest mistake of my refereeing career," Halsey admitted in a column in the Sun.



They travelled to fellow strugglers Wigan Athletic in March 2013 and fell to a damaging 2-1 defeat at the DW Stadium.

But, as I returned to my dressing room, Newcastle boss Alan Pardew stood behind the tunnel door and delivered a volley of abuse.

"I was disciplined by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited when I was dropped from the Premier League and rightly so.

I sat down in my dressing room and thought, ‘For f***’s sake’.
