Hopes of American millionaire Henry Mauriss making a move for Newcastle United appear dashed.

Mauriss had emerged as an alternative to the now failed Saudi-backed bid.

But The Times says hopes of a new takeover by a rival American consortium headed by Mauriss appear a long way off and Lee Charnley, Newcastle's managing director, said the club would now focus on buying new players for the manager, Steve Bruce.

However, Charnley insisted that Mike Ashley, owner of the Sports Direct chain, remained committed to the Saudi deal.
