Mike Ashley met with two Mexican businessmen about the possibility of taking over Newcastle United at a meeting in London, according to reports.

According to The Athletic, Ashley held a meeting in London last week to explore the possibility of a deal being completed.

The Orlegi Group, who own Mexican club Santos Laguna and are spearheaded by Alejandro Iraragorri, were considering Newcastle as a potential investment.

The Mexican buyers were intrigued by the club and held a genuine interest in buying it after watching the film Goal!

After appointing Steve Bruce in the summer, the club have struggled on the pitch.

The Sports Direct owner and business tycoon has tried to find a suitable buyer for the Magpies for some time, with no offers meeting his lofty valuations.

They are now sitting in the relegation zone with just two wins from nine matches.
