Former Spurs manager Tim Sherwood believes Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley deserves 'credit' for appointing Rafa Benitez -  despite not backing him the transfer market.

But speaking on BT Sport, Sherwood believes Ashley is harshly criticised: "He stifles games Rafa Benitez, and he knows how to do it and he knows how to get results.

"Without Rafa Benitez they get relegated with that squad of players.

"I think Mike Ashley has to take some credit for appointing him; yes he doesn't want to go out and sign big money players, average players for big money - what he wants Rafa to do is turn average players into good players, and that is what he is doing."

United fans, and Benitez, have been left frustrated at the lack of funds spent on players especially given the fact the club finished the summer market in profit.

For me, they're in a relegation battle and they've got a lot of hard work to do but they'll get out of it in my opinion and they're good enough to do it because of that man.

Benitez has refused to talk about transfers this January but with injury crisis now hitting his squad - signings are needed sooner rather than later.
