Mike Ashley's failure to read the room amid the virus pandemic merely highlights the issues that continue to stop Newcastle United in their tracks on a yearly basis.

Unwilling to listen, unwilling to talk and unwilling to see anybody's point of view apart from his own, all of that could be levelled at Ashley this week - but by the same token, that has been the story on Tyneside for much of the last 13 years.

Back then he said: "So on financial stability, producing a professionally run football club, proper accounts, proper cash flows, proper accountability - five out of five, very good.

As stated before, Ashley won't do media interviews with any of the North-East reporters and his stance, which developed when Kevin Keegan walked out in 2008, has not altered in well over a decade.

The club will argue that reduced season ticket prices and reasonable packages have been rolled out over the years and credit where it's due, Newcastle have made it easier for fans to see their team.

Having failed to take notice of the subsequent backlash, a request from fans for him to delay season ticket payments fell on deaf ears.

The offer of 10,000 free season tickets this season resulted in further criticism for Ashley and while they were all snapped up, it showed that Newcastle were losing their audience.
