The FA have handed us a huge boost as they have reiterated their commitment to completing the current FA cup campaign.

We were set to face Man City in the quarter-final at St James’ Park on March 21st until the season was cut short due to the coronavirus.

However, despite calls for the cup to be scrapped to help ease the fixture congestion, The Chronicle are reporting that FA chief executive Mark Bullingham has told council members that it is still in everybody’s best wishes to complete the competition – suggesting it will NOT be scrapped.

The quarter-finals would still take place at the respective grounds originally drawn, with Wembley remaining as the location for the semi-finals and final – all played behind closed doors.

This competition could become a lifeline for Bruce – who deserves a crack at the cup – as it would be hard to not keep him in the job if he achieved the unlikely possibility of us winning our first piece of silverware in over 50 years.

So, not only is a takeover ‘expected’ to go through ‘next week’ and Project Restart underway following the players safe return to training, it looks like our FA Cup dream is still alive!

Personally, I am more looking forward to this fixture than any of our other remaining league games, and I’m pretty sure most of our supporters would feel the same – even if it’s bittersweet not being able to attend what could’ve been a memorable night at St James’ Park!

The FA Cup journey has been the highlight of our season, and it would be a real shame if we couldn’t complete it yet had to play out another nine meaningless fixtures in the league.

Only at Newcastle United would we be on the verge of a Wembley appearance after all these years, only for it to be played behind closed doors if we got there!
