Newcastle United scraped through to round three of the League Cup after being pushed all the way by Blackburn Rovers.

Newcastle had to rely on debutant goalkeeper Mark Gillespie just before the hour as he denied Ben Brereton and then Amar'i Bell.

A Ryan Fraser goal in the first half proved to be enough to book a clash with Morecambe next week in Lancashire.

Bruce started the game with a 4-4-2 formation for the second match running but made 10 changes to the side that beat West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday night.

Newcastle struggled to break Rovers down in the first quarter of the contest and only a weaving run into the box from Joelinton, which came to nothing, and Matt Ritchie's wayward deflected shot were the only noteworthy moments in the final third early on.

But Steve Bruce will not complain about the quality of the display so early in the season, especially as there were more positives than negatives overall - not least a solid debut for Mark Gillespie and Fraser's debut strike.

With Blackburn tiring, Bruce handed transfer-listed Christian Atsu an opportunity with 10 minutes to go as he replaced Ritchie.
