A petition calling for an independent investigation into the Newcastle United takeover process has racked up more than 45,000 signatures in a matter of days.

The change.org petition titled 'An indepdendent investigation into the EPL takeover process' was launched following the withdrawal of the offer from the Saudi-led consortium.

The decision following a protracted four-month saga has prompted fury at the Premier League from sections of United supporters on social media.

Magpies' managing director Lee Charnley confirmed owner Mike Ashley remains open to selling the club to the consortium, while Amanda Staveley has given an interview blaming the Premier League for the breakdown of the deal.

The petition has gained traction on social media after being launched by Twitter user @NufctakeoverP - a former season-ticket holder.

He believes an investigation is needed to clear any doubts of "foul play" in a process which has been dominated by claims and silence from the Premier League.

He told ChronicleLive: "There was a lot of news around the takeover before they pulled out about outside influences.

"I just feel there's no harm in having an investigation in place. If there's nothing there, I think that will put a lot of Newcastle fans minds at ease, that they haven't almost been targeted.

"But a lot of stuff that came up around the last four months, I think it creates a lot of doubt over how the whole thing has been handled.

"I think there should be an investigation to see if there's any foul play."

The petition - which is addressed to Prime Minister Boris Johnson - has already exceeded initial hopes for 25,000 signatures.

The petition organiser hopes reaching 50,000 will be "enough to warrant a response at least" on a process which has left Magpies fans in the dark for months.

He added: "I'd seen a lot of petitions in recent months start and fail.

"It's not done in anger or to attack anyone, it's for clarity and confirmation that there was nothing untoward at play.

"The main purpose of it is to gain clarity over the takeover bid."
