Newcastle Fans Choose Their Player Of The Season

It’s a much more pleasant experience writing about who was our Player of the Season last term, than writing about what looks like a failed takeover bid.

The failed bid was an affront to Newcastle United, the City of Newcastle upon Tyne, and Newcastle fans everywhere.

But enough of that for the moment.

Martin Dubravka has won our Player of the Season award after nearly 5,000 votes are in.

Second on the last is Allan Saint-Maximin.

Both had stellar seasons with Martin coming in with 47% of the vote and the Frenchman at 39%, and they dominated the poll.

Third place is taken by the commendable Fede Fernandez (4%), whose experience and dogged never-say-die performances also played a part in Newcastle’s fairly steady season – not fighting against relegation.

We finished in a decent 13th place with 44 points.

It’s hard to tell how many points Martin Dubravka (shown above) saved us last season.

But he has been a wonderful buy at just £4M from Sparta Prague and has played in every single Premier League game for the last two seasons.

He’s a leader on and off the pitch and it’s good we tied him down to a new contract through June 2025.

He has now played 89 times for Newcastle United and a very well done to the 24 times capped Slovakian International.

Allan Saint-Maximin (ASM) has had a terrific first season on Tyneside, and he was the Newcastle attack for much of the season.

He looked unplayable ay times and Steve Bruce has to keep hold of him this summer.

Unfortunately, he was so good that some big clubs will come after him in the summer, but we must stand our ground and keep this lad on Tyneside,

And give him a new improved contract too.

He’s now looking a real bargain at just £17M from Nice and it’s good we signed him on a full six-year deal.

Federico Fernandez was signed two years ago from Swansea for £6M and he played for four full seasons in the Premier League with Swansea.

The 31-year-old Argentine played 117 games in England’s top division before arriving on Tyneside, and his experience and know-how is there for all to see.

He has so for played 47 games in all competitions over the last two seasons for Newcastle.

Let’s hope Steve Bruce is allowed to fortify the side this summer, so we can have a second successive season and at the very least not worry too much about relegation – it’s much easier on the nerves.
