Sunderland’s Jack Bainbridge and Newcastle United’s Elias Sorensen were shown straight red cards in the final minutes as the Black Cats lost the U23 derby at St James’ Park.

And the late red cards added drama just as the game entered injury time.

An early goal from Thomas Allan and a second-half header from Yannick Toure gave the Magpies the points on Tyneside.

The game opened up in the final 15 minutes and Newcastle created a string of chances to add to their lead, but Elias Sorensen, Toure, and Allan, were all unable to convert.

But both sides ended the game with ten men following a scuffle late in the game.

Sorensen reacted to a uncompromising challenge from Bainbridge which saw the Sunderland man win the ball cleanly, but also sent the Newcastle striker flying.

Elliott Dickman included three trialists in his side, with West Brom’s Stan Asomugha – who also played for the Black Cats’ U23s against West Ham recently – playing on the right flank, former Hull City man Tyler Hamilton on the left, and Reading’s Tyler Frost up front alongside Joe Hugill.
