Newcastle United fans' group speak of 'regret' over £120m development next to St James' Park

A Newcastle United fans’ group has spoken of its biggest regret after plans for an enormous development next to St James’ Park were given the green light.

A £120m transformation of Strawberry Place was signed off by Newcastle City Council on Friday , despite Toon supporters’ fears over the project.

We are hoping to continue talking with them to make it the best development possible in terms of the impact on St James' Park.

A disappointed Greg Tomlinson, of the Newcastle United Supporters’ Trust , said after the meeting that he wished more had been done to stop previous building plans from being approved for Strawberry Place in 2017, which established the principle of developing the land.

More than 1,700 objections were lodged against the scheme and the authority’s planning committee was warned that it will restrict views of the iconic football stadium , as well as hindering any future expansion of the Gallowgate End.

Mr Tomlinson pledged that the fans’ group, which represents 10,000 Magpies supporters, would work with the developers as the project moves forward.
