Dwight Gayle has been charged with 'successful deception of a match official' after allegedly diving to win West Brom a penalty against Nottingham Forest.

Gayle has scored 16 goals since joining West Brom on a season-long loan deal from Newcastle last summer.

'West Bromwich Albion’s Dwight Gayle has been charged for successful deception of a match official’ following the game against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday,' an FA statement read.

With the Baggies 2-1 down at the Hawthorns, the Newcastle loanee won his side a penalty in the 89th-minute after referee Lee Mason felt he had been felled in the area.

Replays showed there had been no contact with any Forest player as Gayle went down, but strike partner Jay Rodriguez duly stepped up to score West Brom's equaliser to earn his side a precious point.

Forest boss Martin O'Neill revealed Mason told him 'if it was a mistake it was an honest one' post-match and, following an independent panel review, the FA have now taken action by charging Gayle.

If Gayle accepts the charge, he will be handed an automatic two-match ban - which would rule him out of Sunday's huge derby against Aston Villa.
