'We're at the elite level and for me the referee looked short': Newcastle boss Steve Bruce says referee Tim Robinson 'was not ready' to officiate in Premier League after Burnley defeatSteve Bruce slammed referee Tim Robinson after Newcastle's defeat at BurnleyRobinson officiated for the first time in the top flight at Turf Moor on Saturday The referee originally awarded Newcastle a goal kick before changing his mind Burnley had then capitalised from the corner kick to edge to all three points

Steve Bruce slammed the performance of rookie referee Tim Robinson after Newcastle fell to defeat against Burnley.

The Magpies boss was left feeling aggrieved after the official, making his top flight bow at Turf Moor, awarded Burnley a corner after originally settling for a visitors' goal kick.

And from the set piece, Martin Dubravka was left horribly floundering under the delivery and Chris Wood headed home - although Bruce believed the real blame fell solely at the feet of the referee.

Newcastle were also adamant that goal scorer Wood had impeded Federico Fernandez inside the penalty area chaos, leaving Bruce furious enough to once again hit out at Robinson in his post-match press conference.

‘We feel aggrieved that the referee has awarded them a corner after initially giving a goal kick,’ Bruce said. ‘He’s heard something in his ear from someone 90 yards away and given a corner.’

‘I’ve seen it again: a clear, blatant foul. We knew the referee was making his debut and you hope it doesn’t hang on a refereeing decision.

'We’re at the elite level and for me the referee looked short. I never really want to criticise.'

The Magpies boss was irked after the official handed Burnley a corner from which they scored

The Sussex-based referee had also irked Bruce in August, after the official failed to send off Leicester's Hamza Choudhury following a challenge on Matt Ritchie in the two sides' Carabao Cup clash.

The Scotland international is still yet to return to action for the Magpies, and Bruce added: ‘That’s twice he’s refereed us and he missed a red card against Leicester in the cup. Matt Ritchie still hasn’t recovered from the tackle. He gave foul after foul after foul. More experienced referees would have let things go.

‘There were far too many mistakes and for me, he was not ready to referee a Premier League game. He reacted to the crowd.’

Newcastle's mini-revival was brought to an abrupt end in Lancashire, with the Magpies having failed to record a single shot on target after Dwight Gayle squandered a golden opening late on.
