Newcastle went 1-0 down at Stamford Bridge thanks to a goal from Pedro, and fans used that moment as an opportunity to sing abuse at Ashley.

Newcastle fans could be heard singing “You fat f***ing b***ard, get out of our club!” during BT Sport’s live broadcast of the game.

Ashley’s ownership of Newcastle has long been a hot topic of discussion among fans.

The Sports Direct owner bought the Tyneside club back in 2007 but has since failed to inject substantial amounts of transfer money into the club.

Manager Rafa Benitez has previously stated his side’s lack of transfer business in the winter and summer windows.

Benitez also previously stated that it would take a “miracle” for him to keep Newcastle in the Premier League this season.

Before the game, during Rio Ferdinand had his say on the situation surrounding the club.

"I don't even know him [Mike Ashley] very well!,” he told Jake Humphrey on BT Sport.

"When they went down, he spent £50m of his own money to get them up. Thank you, that should be.

"By the way, please say thank you for getting Rafa Benítez in! They're lucky to have him!"

It was reported back in December that Ashley was hopeful of selling the club stating that an ideal situation would be to sell “before the January transfer window”.

“It's possible, realistic is maybe too strong a word,” he told Sky Sports in December.

"I'm very keen to sell it to the right buyer so everybody is happy, that would be good news.”

The club, however, are very much still under Ashley’s ownership.

Club legend Alan Shearer has also previously taken the opportunity to dig at Ashley.

Back in August, it was confirmed that Ashley had bought department store House of Fraser for £90m.

Reacting on Twitter, Shearr jokingly questioned: “What position does he play?”, jibing at his former club’s lack of transfer activity.
