Newcastle United must swoop for Rangers defender James Tavernier as he would address a key issue with Rafa Benitez’s current squad.

The Spanish manager is struggling for adequate options on both flanks of his defence and it’s clear the club need a new right-back and left-back to solve this problem.

As it stands in regards to the right flank, if first choice option DeAndre Yedlin suffers an injury than Javier Manquillo is likely to start in his place.

The latter has never looked like a reliable option to call upon and you feel that Benitez only turns to the Spaniard when Yedlin is unavailable as he is simply the only choice he has with any decent amount of Premier League experience.

Yet Benitez’s problems with right-back don’t end there as Yedlin has time and time again proven to be inconsistent, especially regarding his defensive duties,  and is liable to being exposed during games.

However the speedy American probably doesn’t feel too much pressure over bad performances as it’s not like there’s someone breathing down his neck for a first-team spot.

This is an issue for the Magpies as having a solid defence in the Premier League is important to them continuing to stay in the division with ease, especially when you consider their lack of firepower up front.

Luckily for Benitez there is an obvious way to address this key issue and that is by swooping for Gers right-back Tavernier.

The 27-year-old previously made 10 appearances for the Magpies after rising through the club’s youth system but left on a permanent basis to join Wigan in 2014.

Since his exit, Tavernier has upped his game and looks able to be member of the Magpies’ first-team plans if snapped up.

The defender has had many memorable moments since his St James Park exit and has shone bright even when playing in the Europa League.

The right-back has excelled in his 30 outings this season, even contributing 13 assists, and would clearly be able to at the very least make Yedlin sweat over his first-team status.

Also Tavernier would be a budget friendly option as when West Bromwich Albion tried to sign him in the summer, the Gers slapped a £7million price tag on him (Source: TEAMTalk) and that would definitely see him be an affordable option.

Given that the Gers only recently assessed his value than he could cost £7million if the Magpies swooped in January.

Therefore the Magpies must reunite themselves with Tavernier by making a move for him as he ticks all the right boxes.
