Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles left St James’ Park on crutches after the 2-1 win against Bournemouth on Saturday, according to Chronicle journalist Lee Ryder.

The reporter claimed via his personal Twitter account after the match that Lascelles, 25, was also wearing a knee support and is set to be assessed over the course of the rest of the weekend to discover the extent of his injury.

Lascelles was forced off the pitch in the 20th minute as the Magpies went on to secure their second win in a row courtesy of goals by fellow defenders DeAndre Yedlin and Ciaran Clark.

OPINION

Lascelles has been a mainstay of the Newcastle defence this season with the former Nottingham Forest centre-back completing 90 minutes in all but one Premier League match before he was forced off against Bournemouth. Lascelles has been a rock at times in that defence but Steve Bruce does have other options available to him if the 25-year-old is sidelined for an extended period of time. Paul Dummett, Fabian Schar and Florian Lejeune could all replace Lascelles if they are fit over the coming weeks but luckily the international break gives the Magpies captain two weeks off to recover without having to miss any matches. Hopefully it is not too serious but at the end of the day, injuries are part of football and Bruce has enough centre-back options to ensure that form does not drop too much. Lascelles’ leadership, rather than his defensive qualities, would be missed more than anything though.
