The Saudi Arabian-backed takeover of the Magpies is OFF after the bidders pulled out of the deal.

In a statement to ChronicleLive, the would-be owners said: "Ultimately, during the unforeseeably prolonged process, the commercial agreement between the Investment Group and the club's owners expired and our investment thesis could not be sustained, particularly with no clarity as to the circumstances under which the next season will start and the new norms that will arise for matches, training and other activities."

Mauriss bid 'a way off'

Hopes of a new takeover by a rival American consortium headed by Henry Mauriss appear a long way off and Lee Charnley, Newcastle’s managing director, said the club would now focus on buying new players for the manager, Steve Bruce. However, Charnley insisted that Ashley, owner of the Sports Direct chain, remained committed to the Saudi deal.
