Newcastle United have booked their place in the third round of the Carabao Cup for the first time in four years following a 1-0 win against Blackburn Rovers at St James' Park.

On this evidence, Callum Wilson et al are untouchables.

Ryan Fraser marked his debut with a goal 10 minutes before half-time and it proved a telling contribution as a disjointed Magpies' side struggled to build on that advantage against Championship opposition.

This has ultimately proved to be a productive summer window for Newcastle and Callum Wilson, Jeff Hendrick and Jamal Lewis have not only improved the starting line-up, but also raised the quality of the squad, itself.

This was a real opportunity for a number of players, but Newcastle looked disjointed.

Steve Bruce may have made 10 changes to the side that triumphed at the London Stadium three days previously, but it said it all about the strength in depth in the squad that the team he picked half-resembled a side the Newcastle head coach would have selected last season.

There may not have been any supporters in the stadium to witness Mark Gillespie's debut, but this second-round tie at St James' Park will have been the stuff of dreams for the boyhood Newcastle fan.
