Opinion – Premier League Now Playing Favorites With Takeovers – And Not Abiding By Their Own Rules

Let me vent for one or two more articles as I try to get over what seems to be the Premier League having purposely prevented the Staveley consortium from buying Newcastle.

I have to get it out of my system what seems to be a huge kick in the behind for every Newcastle fan around the world.

We should now be the richest club in the world, but the Premier League didn’t want that to happen.

Amanda Staveley was very distraught when the PIF pulled the plug on her deal to try to buy Newcastle.

So what happened is the the PL delayed and delayed and delayed and delayed – an obvious strategy.

But the positive news is that there’s a chance, a small chance, that the deal could be resurrected, but the Premier League seems to have played hardball all the way through this.

They were obviously hoping the longer it went on the consortium would eventually give up and get them off the hook.

They didn’t have to even make a decision and specifically point to why the bid failed their owners’ and directors’ test.

The shameful PL CEO Richard Masters

The news is that Liverpool and Tottenham were two of the Premier League clubs badgering the league not to let the deal go through.

And so, after 16 weeks in their owners’ and directors’ test, the PIF finally got sick of being asked to jump through so many hoops.

But it’s also shameful because it would appear the consortium didn’t fail any of the current owners’ and directors’ tests so the PL looked to other (devious) ways not to OK the deal.

That’s a disgrace and of course, could only happen to Newcastle.

It’s in our DNA that things are always difficult.

If that’s not true, then it’s a good way to get over the very severe hurt and disappointment the Premier League have put our fans through for four very long months.

It’s shameful.

Premier League CEO Rochard Masters comes out of this looking very weak and timid.

It appears he bowed to the pressures of those people and organizations who didn’t want the deal to happen, rather than doing his job.

Now we’ll watch very carefully for the next Premier League club in a takeover and how they fly through the test – even if Vladimir Putin or Kim Jong-un is the majority owner.

It’s going to take some time to get over this – so please cut me some slack.

And I hope the deal may be resurrected – but with Ms. Staveley rightly blasting the Premier League, that has to be unlikely.

We’re devastated about this – but life goes on, or so they tell me.
