Rafa Benitez admits he risked his reputation to stay at Newcastle United this season - despite lucrative offers to depart the club.

And, while the £5.5million compensation Benitez would need to pay the club if he decided to leave of his own volition has prevented the Spaniard from merely resigning, the ex-Liverpool manager has rejected big-money offers from clubs in Russia and China to stay at Newcastle.

“I said before, I wanted to come to England, to stay close to my family," Benitez replied during his pre-Chelsea Press conference when he was asked why he is still in charge at Newcastle despite all of the internal problems he has encountered at St James' Park.

"I was quite clear.

"I can be wrong, yes, fine.
