Much-maligned owner Ashley is looking to sell Newcastle and most Toon fans cannot wait until it happens.

But until a deal goes through, the owner is reluctant to spend money in the transfer market to bolster Rafa Benitez's squad.

Ferdinand is involved with Ashley’s company Sports Direct, where he has a clothing range.

However, the Manchester United legend says that has not affected his views on Ashley’s situation at Newcastle.

And he reckons supporters should be thankful for Ashley for getting them back in the Premier League two years ago.

“I don’t even know him, I don’t even know him really well,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport.

“I will get to know him.

“My issue is, it’s got nothing to do with the business dealings that I’ve got with his company, I just think that when they went down, he spent £50m-odd to get them back up of his own money. Thank you, that should be.”

BT Sport host Jake Humphrey took objection to Ferdinand’s comments ahead of the trip to Chelsea on Saturday, questioning why it was Ashley’s money.

“Why was it his money?” Humphrey said.

“Wasn’t it Newcastle’s money they generated in their time in the Premier League? It’s the club’s money.”

Ferdinand says the owner can do what he wants with the money and also thinks supporters should be grateful for Ashley bringing manager Benitez to St James’ Park.

“He’s the owner,” Ferdinand replied.

So he’s done that to get them back up. And by the way, please say thank you for getting Rafael Benitez in because really by rights, they’re lucky to have him.”

Humphrey once again intervened, responding: “Well I think it was Rafa Benitez who approached Newcastle with the idea of going there as manager.”

That did not deter Ferdinand though, who said: “It doesn’t matter, he still got him.

“Newcastle are a yoyo club, Newcastle have been a yoyo club for how many years?”

Humphrey says that is Ashley’s fault, claiming: “Proper investment and they won’t be a yoyo club.”

But Ferdinand says Ashley would be wrong to spend money when he is looking to sell the club.

“Yeah but he doesn’t want to do that no more,” the pundit said.

“He’s been there, he’s done that, he wants to move on.

“What’s the problem? He wants to sell the club. Why should he go and spend millions and millions of pounds?

“If he spent £30m on a striker and £30m on a midfielder as he’s trying to sell the club and both of them get injured - £60m down the drain.

“Would you do that? Would you do that?”
