Steve Bruce has lifted the lid on why Miguel Almiron was left out of his starting line-up at West Ham on the opening night of the season.

Bruce guided Newcastle to this stage of the competition for the first time in three years.

Bruce said: "Listen, I left him out – I think you all know what I think of Almiron, he's a manager's delight I made a call on Saturday because we needed to be able to match West Ham physically, otherwise the game might have been out of sight for us.

Tony always plays a certain way and I think he'll count himself a bit unlucky."

Now, Steve Bruce must recollect his team and push forward  without the change of ownership and new backing.

The South American playmaker came off the bench at the London Stadium to grab an assist for Jeff Hendrick and he was on hand to dish out another debut goal for Ryan Fraser in the narrow 1-0 League Cup win over Blackburn Rovers.

However, despite his omission in the capital, Bruce has no qualms about Almiron and the former MLS star is back in contention for the home clash with Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday.
