Steve Bruce was reluctant to confirm interest in Granit Xhaka but called the Arsenal midfielder "a very good player" amid reports that Newcastle want to sign the player.

Arsenal head coach Unai Emery has not put the 27-year-old in a matchday squad since the outburst and revealed on Friday that Xhaka had told him he does not feel ready to play against Leicester this weekend.

With Xhaka's future at Arsenal up in the air, Newcastle have emerged as an interested party alongside clubs from the Bundesliga.

"Bruce was reluctant to speak about the possible transfer telling reporters:"Granit Xhaka? Look, I was only in the job two weeks and I was linked with 42 players.

Bruce will ostensibly be given funds to improve his squad in January but it has also been claimed that a loan move would benefit the Magpies due to Xhaka's £100,000-a-week wages and handsome transfer value.

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley could use the public fallout between Xhaka and Arsenal to drive a hard bargain.

"Emery admitted on Friday that Xhaka may never play for Arsenal again, saying:"As a coach I have a responsibility for the team.
