Steve Bruce has dismissed transfer speculation linking Newcastle United with Granit Xhaka.

The Arsenal midfielder appears set to exit the club in January after being stripped of the captaincy following a furious confrontation with fans at the Emirates.

Newcastle are reportedly prepared to take Xhaka on loan once the winter window opens and Bruce was asked if he was interested in signing the Gunner.

Bruce replied: ‘Granit Xhaka? Look, I was only in the job two weeks and I was linked with 42 players.

It is unclear if Xhaka will play for Arsenal again, but he ruled himself out of the game against Leicester City on Saturday.

Emery revealed Xhaka felt he could not feature amid the turmoil at the club and could not say if the former captain would be given a chance at redemption.

‘As a coach I have a responsibility for the team. We need a player like Granit Xhaka,’ Emery said before the game at Leicester City.

‘But also, I don’t know if he’s going to play again. I don’t know if he is available in his mind to continue helping us and continuing defending the Arsenal shirt.

‘Then, if I decide he is in the group with us, if he is ready and 100 per cent in his mind with the decision to help us and to play with his quality helping us.

‘We need that quality and that player.

‘We’re now a little weaker without him in that position because we have one less player.’
