Steve Bruce was offered the Newcastle United job in July this year.

As for this summer’s offer from Mike Ashley, Alex Bruce says in July he told dad Steve he had better take the job this time ‘otherwise I’d come after him with a shovel!’, the shovel of course wasn’t needed.

Back when he was with Birmingham City, Bruce was offered the job by Freddy Shepherd and John Hall after Sir Bobby Robson was sacked in 2004.

When journalists and fans pointed out what a mess Steve Bruce had made when making substitutions, leading to chaos on the pitch and Arsenal’s winning goal, Alex Bruce felt duty bound to stick up for his dad, with embarrassing consequences… “A few years ago dad had the opportunity to go there [Newcastle United] when he was at Birmingham.

His son Alex has been talking about that occasion 15 years ago and says at the time he told his dad that ‘he’d be an idiot not to take it’ when Steve Bruce rang him for advice.

However, it wasn’t the first time he had been offered it.

Alex Bruce made headlines himself (see below) on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.
