The Premier League "didn't want to make a decision" and forced the prospective buyers of Newcastle United to withdraw.

That's the view of pundit and former Sunderland striker Darren Bent, who has criticised the Premier League for their inaction over the proposed deal.

PCP Capital Partners, the Reuben brothers and the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund confirmed they had pulled out on Thursday following a protracted and public takeover saga.

Financier Amanda Staveley has blamed the Premier League and rival clubs for the breakdown of the deal, while Magpies managing director Lee Charnley has since confirmed owner Mike Ashley remains open to a sale to the consortium.

The Premier League have declined to comment on the latest developments, despite widespread criticism from fans and pundits alike.

Bent has now weighed into the debate, arguing the league should have been more clinical in their approach and made a decision.

Instead, the 36-year-old believes their inaction forced the hand of the prospective buyers.

Bent told Football Insider : “What I don’t like about it is that I kind of felt that the Premier League didn’t want to make a decision.

“I felt they dragged it, dragged it, dragged it out and in the end, obviously, it was those guys that pulled out, said it was taking too long and pulled out the deal. I would have like to see the Premier League make a decision.

“The last decision that should have been made was the guys pulling out of the deal, they should have been the last ones to make a decision.

“The Premier League should have been like: ‘This is what we’re doing, bang, bang, bang, these are the criteria they need to meet and if they don’t this is what happens.’

“They’ve still not even made a decision and it is really disappointing. It’s massive, humungous and the Premier League have to take some of the blame here because they dragged their feet, didn’t make a decision and they’ve been forced into this.”
