'To get that right, you have to spend money': Rafa on why Newcastle lack quality in final third

Newcastle United "have to spend money" on attacking players if they want quality decision-makers who will make the difference in the final third, believes Rafa Benitez.

The Magpies once again ran a top-six side close at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, but the Magpies' lack of firepower eventually saw them succumb to a 2-1 defeat against Chelsea.

However, the Spaniard did hint at the kind of acquisitions he would like the Newcastle hierarchy to make this month when he discussed Chelsea's class in the final third - and United's lack of decision-makers in that key area of the pitch.

United have netted just 16 goals so far this season, the second-lowest tally in the Premier League, while centre-back Ciaran Clark is the Magpies' second-top scorer with three strikes in 2018/19.

The Magpies are yet to make a signing this month, despite Benitez having made clear he wants at least three additions - two of which would be attacking reinforcements - and the Newcastle manager has refused to discuss United's lack of transfer business in public.
