OPINION

Newcastle United will go into their clash with Sheffield United on Thursday evening full of confidence after their 2-2 draw with Manchester City last time out.

After Kevin De Bruyne put his side into the lead in the final 10 minutes it would have been easy for the Magpies to fall down and take a commendable defeat, but they continued pushing and Jonjo Shelvey scored to earn a point.

Newcastle have been better away from home this season, with their counter-attacking style already helping them pick up three points against West Ham and Tottenham.

Steve Bruce spoke glowingly of Thursday’s opponents, claiming it is no surprise to him that they have started the season so well – currently sitting in the top half, only a couple of points off the European qualification spots.

“There’s no surprise to me that they’re making a fist of it in the Premier League as well. They’re a very very decent side, with good players,” he told Sky Sports.

The Magpies’ boss went on to reveal that he had been asked for advice about life in the Premier League during pre-season by Chris Wilder, claiming the roles have now been reversed.

“Over the summer he was seeking my advice over one or two things, and before I knew it I’m seeking advice off him!”

Dependant on what Bruce actually told Wilder over the summer, it could certainly come back to haunt his Newcastle side when they travel to Brammall Lane.

Especially given how strong the Blades have started in their system this season, it wouldn’t be a surprise should the Magpies get unstuck in South Yorkshire.

Newcastle have been very good on the counter-attack this season, and it would be smart to adapt that style once again. Sheffield United are happy with their central defenders overlapping their full-backs in the final third, and that leads to massive holes at the back.

Should players such as Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin get into those holes behind the Blades’ midfield, they could certainly take advantage of Wilders’ formation.

Bruce’s advice could certainly come back to haunt him on Thursday though should Wilder manage his side to yet another three points in the Premier League.
